The New Testament suggests a dynamic relationship between churches and missionaries for spreading the gospel of Christ in the world today. Both parties should play an active role. Missionaries tend to be very motivated and enthusiastic about God’s work in a foreign land. Churches, on the other and, seldom see the missionary and have legitimate ministries at home.

The School of Mission has been named after the distinguished and past missionary Omega Vega who served for many years in the country of Peru. During her missionary service in the 1970’s and 1980’s, she assisted the poor, taught in Bible Institutes and helped found churches. Missionary Omega Vega was a nurse and used her profession to serve the needy. In 1994, during the Annual District Convention of the Spanish Eastern District of the Assemblies of God, a proposal was approved to start a mission training school that would serve the Hispanic constituency in the Northeast Region of the United States. Due to the growing interest in missionary outreach among Hispanic Pentecostals in the setting of New York City and its surroundings, the need for a program of study that would equip clergy and laypersons was evident. Global and urban challenges created an awareness of the need to train Hispanic Pentecostals.

In 1996, the Spanish Eastern District of the Assemblies of God, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Domingo Valdés (Director of the Foreign and Home Missions Board), the Rev. Rafael Reyes II (Director of the Department of Education) and the Executive Committee of the Spanish Eastern District headed by Rev. Dr. Adolfo Carrión, the School of Missions became a reality. Rev. Eliezer Reyes, a missionary sent by the Spanish Eastern District to Sevilla, Spain, relocated to New York City to initiate the project.

The first academic year began in September of 1996 and has operated in the facilities of the Spanish Eastern School of Theology in Bronx, New York (1260 Thieriot Avenue). The school has graduated over 300 students who are actively involved in numerous church ministries both at home and abroad.
